The Giver : Katie and Elwell #5

Jonas asks his parents " do you love me?" (from chapter 16)

Katie (aka kittys) opinion: The fact that Jonas said that shows that he had so much courage. For his parents to react like that made me wonder: what happened in the community to make that word mean less than today?

Elwell #5- I think the way Jonas's parents reacted to his question was dumb because love should not be a meaningless word.

  1. I thought it was really sad when Jonas's parents reacted this way- What is it about their community that makes it so difficult for them to understand love?

Ms.Vance, our group is also reading the giver and we think that Sameness is the reason that there is no love.

    1. Yeah, I agree. I think it would be impossible to love ice cream if it was all ice cream was vanilla- but the reason I can LOVE "Americone Dream" from Ben & Jerry's is because it's taste is so unusual and fabulous! : o)

      Sameness- boo.
