Loz Lowry

The Giver by Lois Lowry

In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on a field and had begged him for water. He hadf a sudden choking feeling, as if it were difficult to breathe.
This quote was about how Jonas felt after he saw the kids playing war games.

The Giver -Team W.A.L.L.Z.

"Rosemary had only those five weeks' worth, and most of them were good ones. But there were those few terrible memories, the ones that had overwhelmed her. For a while they overwhelmed the community. all those feelings! They'd never experienced that before. "
                                                                       The Giver

QUESTION: How would the community be affected if Jonas' memories were released to them?

These are the horrified expressions of the community after Rosemary's memories were released.

Team A.R.C.H ch.17- ch.20 1/12/12

(Please do not read this if you have not finished or read this book before)

OK so the scene starts out with Asher and his friends playing a game of war, and then Jonas comes right in and says this is an awful game I don't think you should play this ever again!
When Jonas goes to training the next morning he learns what happened to the earlier receiver in training, Rosemary. Later finding out that she was the Giver's daughter. As they are talking about Rosemary the subject of release comes up. Jonas finds out what release really means. Release means - Quick death.

Key subjects-
1. The game of war.  Harper- This sounds a lot like capture the flag. Which I happen to enjoy a lot.

2. When Jonas learns Rosemary's story from the Giver. Anna- I like learning things.

3. Jonas learns what release really means. Rok- The awkward question of release makes and Rosemary's story makes being a receiver seem like a bad thing.

4. Jonas and the Giver plot how Jonas will escape. Anna- Action. Harper- Lights-Camera-Action

And that is all for now. Harper - Folks.

                - sincerely

The Giver : Katie and Elwell #5

Jonas asks his parents " do you love me?" (from chapter 16)

Katie (aka kittys) opinion: The fact that Jonas said that shows that he had so much courage. For his parents to react like that made me wonder: what happened in the community to make that word mean less than today?

Elwell #5- I think the way Jonas's parents reacted to his question was dumb because love should not be a meaningless word.

"We don't dare let people make choices of their own".

What do you think our world would be like if there were no choices to make and they were made for you?

"Sometimes," she went on, speaking now in a lighter tone, relaxing the tension in the Auditorium, "we are not entirely certain about the assignments, even after the most painstaking observations. Sometimes we worry that the one assigned might not develop through training, every attribute necessary. Elevens are still children after all. what we observe as playfulness and patience --- the requirements to become Nurturer --- could, with maturity,be revealed as simply foolishness and indolence. So we continue to observe during training, and to modify behavior when necessary."

Question: What if you had the requirements for a job and were given that job without your consent?

We chose this image from 'It's A Wonderful Life' because he is being given a job that he does not want but it suits him right.

This is an image from The Giver and it explains the ceremony of Twelve, from which the quote relies on.

Today's literature circle was very interesting. Although two people in are group did not hand in there work we had a little discussion about chapter's 13 - 16.

Main events and points -
1. Jonas gets real pain from a memory.
2. Gabe sleeps through the night in Jonas's room.

3. Jonas accidentally gives Gabe a memory of a calming sail on a lake.
